Expect the unexpected
The sun is shining, traditional Moldovan music is in the air, the pavement is full with hulls of sunflower seeds, people are standing in front of a Mercedes Sprinter. At first sight this seems to be a scene out of the daily life in the Republic of Moldova, but the setting is more than 1500 km away from Chisinau in Berlin, the capital of Germany.
In a 250 kilometre-long underground labyrinth, the biggest treasure of Moldova is kept. More than 2 million bottles of delicious Moldovan wine are stored in perfect climatic conditions in the largest “wine city” of Europe. „Precious oldtimer cars, colourful traditional costumes, a massive parade of thousands of people, party on the streets, concerts on the big and small stages throughout the whole day and night. This is not the carneval in Rio, this is the Balti day”, was the announcement for the live transmission of Publik TV for the city holiday in Bălţi. “A honeybee has to fly 40.000 times to produce one kilogramme of honey”, explains Aurel Popovici. He is a beekeeper and his beehives are situated in the acacia woods near the lake of Balti. “Acacia honey is the healthiest, sweetest and tastiest honey ever”, says Popovici, while serving us a soup plate full of honey with two big spoons. Chiţcani is the biggest religious complex on the territory of the Republic of Moldova. The all-male monastery is located on the right bank of the Dniester, not far from Bender, in the village of Chiţcani. The name “Novo-Nyametskyi Sviato Voznesenskyi Cloister” signifies the status of the monastery as a successor to the original Neamţ Monastery in Romania.

Bălţi is known as the second biggest city in Moldova, its pedestrian zone, the only one in Moldova, and its ugly Soviet architecture. It was back in Soviet times when the psycho-neurological sanatorium of Balti, which is situated in the forest on a smooth hill, opened its gates. On a walk through the main street of Tiraspol, the capital of Transdniestria, you pass by some main attractions as the Lenin statue in front of the parliament building, the outstanding statue of Alexander Suvorov or the Soviet tank monument.

A legend says that in the 18th century one of Moldova’s rulers, Grigore Ghica, fell incurably ill. One day a peasant in a bull cart stopped at the gates of the ruler’s palace and asked for an audience. The man promised to cure his majesty in return the ruler should handover his power, for one month, to somebody else.
